Qubes OS
How Qubes OS works
Qubes OS uses virtualization to split tasks into separate qubes. A problem in one qube therefore does not automatically grant access to the others.
TemplateVMs
Applications are usually managed through a template. AppVMs share the software base while keeping their data separate.
Network isolation
Network traffic is handled by separate system qubes. You can use a qube without networking or route traffic through Tor.
Disposable qubes
For one-off or risky files, use a disposable qube that is removed when it is shut down.
Hardware matters
Qubes OS requires a 64-bit Intel or AMD platform with hardware virtualization. IOMMU and SLAT are important for strong isolation. Always check the official Hardware Compatibility List: not every laptop with enough RAM works well with Qubes OS.

- Bare-metal installation — Qubes OS runs as the main operating system, not on top of Windows or Linux.
- Encrypted storage — the installation uses full-disk encryption; recovery information remains your responsibility.
- Baseline layout — standard AppVMs for work, personal use and downloads, adjusted during handover.
- Update guidance — TemplateVMs, dom0 and system qubes have different update paths that we explain.
What Qubes OS does not promise
Qubes OS does not make a laptop automatically secure. You still need to install updates, handle downloads carefully and account for hardware, firmware and supply-chain trust.
